Three Places to Embrace a Sweet Tooth in Chicago

Writer: LFaitsLFaits

I have a sweet tooth- well, maybe more than a sweet tooth. OK, I’m a full blown chocoholic! The last time I tried to go without sugar, I made it a month before cracking hard. (I may or may not have put peanut M&Ms in a jar of nutella and eaten it with a spoon.) After that, I realized it’s really all about balance. What’s the harm in treating yourself every once in a while? Especially in graduate school, I need a lot of treats.

I would like to share with you my three favorite places in Chicago to indulge my cravings without breaking my budget. Hopefully, you’ll get a chance to enjoy them, too!

OK. I’m obsessed. This donut shop originated in L.A. and happened to hop over to Chicago. Now, people in Chicago (like me) can’t get enough. They have begun popping up all over the city. The donuts are a little pricier than your average Dunkin’, but I find that they’re worth it. Whether you like chocolate, pistachio, or cinnamon, there are plenty of flavors to choose from with different fillings. You’re bound to find one you like.

Have you ever had a filled cupcake? Well, you should. Molly’s Cupcakes has become a bit of an attraction in Chicago. You can build your own cupcake, or choose from the variety of flavors. I’d recommend the creme brûlée or, of course, the chocolate. There are a couple of locations in the city, so it’s pretty easy to find. They even have mini pies!

3. Taylor St.

Like many from the New York and New England area, I grew up Irish-Italian-American. This meant that every St. Patrick’s Day was full of corned beef and cabbage, and every Christmas Eve was full of meat, cheeses, and pastries. When I headed to Chicago, I was determined to find the best place for a good cannoli. Thus far, I think it’s safe to say that you’re bound to find a great Italian pastry shop on Taylor Street.  Half the fun is trying different places around that part of town!

Whenever I need a pick-me-up after a tough exam or something to keep me going when studying, I find myself at one of these locations. Don’t worry- I’m sure I’ll find many more.
